SEO can be a minefield of TLA's (three letter acronyms!) and jargon that can leave the less internet savvy perplexed. Here we aim to take the mystery from the this marketing phenomenon and explain it in nice, simple plain old english (well, maybe with a slight Yorkshire twang!)

SEO is Search Engine Optimisation. This involves taking the existing content of your website and altering it to make it more "in-tune" with google/Bing/Yahoo's ranking calculation's as well as adding content elsewhere on the web. Adding content elsewhere provides a link or "Vote" to the page on your website. Search engines need a way of seperating the wheat from the chaff so to speak, and this helps (especially if the site you are being linked from is good!) them decide where to place you. Imagine the effort search engines like google need to go to in order to determine where to put a website. The quality and relevance of the information of the sites returned when you search for something is their business. If it repeatedly returned out of date or irrelevant information your not going to rush to use it again are you? Now it's the understanding of this ranking methodology where the SEO comes in. This isn't information you can go and pick up from a book published by Google. They are very guarded about their methodology as if everyone knew, how could they position everyone?! It's through experience and time and effort that an SEO will learn how to harness the best techniques and approach for each case, not to mention google and other search engines are more than happy to change the rules in order to improve their results.
